Agrifood systems – including crop and livestock production, land-use change, food manufacturing, retail, consumption, and disposal – account for one-third of all global carbon emissions, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Finding innovative ways to sustainably increase agricultural production will be essential to achieving the UNʻs Sustainable Development Goal of feeding the worldʻs growing population and ending hunger and malnutrition by 2030. Sustainable agricultural practices help to reduce agricultureʻs contribution to climate change by sequestering carbon in soil, and provide other critical societal benefits, by empowering small farmers, ending rural poverty, and ensuring healthy lifestyles. The Transatlantic Climate Alliance brings together innovators who are advancing sustainable agricultural practices and food systems, including strategies to maximize carbon storage in soil and forests, restore degraded lands, and reduce food waste.
